Jessica Simpson has said that she experienced her "deepest heartbreak" following her split from her husband, Eric Johnson after 10 years of marriage.

Back in January, it was announced that the couple, who married in 2014 and share three children, announced that they had separated.

At the time, Jessica Simpson released this statement, "Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage".

"Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family", she added.

"deepest heartbreak"

Now, Jessica Simpson has opened up about this break up to her sister, Ashlee Simpson Ross, and how this ordeal has inspired her upcoming EP, Nashville Canyon.

Speaking to her sister, Jessica said that this record was created "through the deepest heartbreak of my life".

"It was the most intense yet enlightening therapy I've ever been through", she said.

Simpson also explained the difference in putting this album together as an independent artist, including writing and recording it, compared to previous records she has released. For instance, Simpson said that she enjoyed the autonomy of not being beholden to a record company.

"The music releases from my younger years were all over the place in terms of actual direction. It was always about following pop-music trends no matter the cost", she explained. "Even if I didn't love what I was singing, it was what the label needed of me. I was always going to abide by the rules because I was taught to be a rule-abider".

Elsewhere, Jessica Simpson also noted how much giving up alcohol has affected her ability to write songs.

"Once I gave up the alcohol, the fears just diminished. They went away. And it was so much easier for me to access myself artistically," she shared. "I'd thought the more I drank, the more cool I could be and find cool words that would rhyme, that wouldn't be so expected. I overthought it when I drank".
