The remake is being written by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage who created TV series Gossip Girl, while Blake Lively, Penn Badgley, Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick are to star as part of the cast.

Reese Witherspoon starred in the original movie in 2001, alongside Luke Wilson, Jennifer Coolidge, Selma Blair, and Matthew Davis, which saw Witherspoon's character Elle try to win back her ex boyfriend Warning Huntington II played by Davis, by studying at Harvard Law School, where she overcomes stereotypes to become a successful lawyer.

2003 saw the majority of the cast return for the sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, where Elle who is a postgraduate at this point, travels to Washington DC, to try to persuade politicians to ban animal testing. The film ends with Elle setting her sights on the White House.
