Oscar winners Leonard DiCaprio and Michelle Yeoh have paid tribute to the late Pope Francis for helping to inspire "generations of environmentalists around the world", and for being a "beacon of humility, compassion and courage".
The Vatican confirmed the pontiff's death, following a cerebral stroke which led to a coma and irreversible heart failure. He was 88 years old.
"Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sadness I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis", Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced. "At 7:35 this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father". More on this here.
Taking to Instagram, Leonard DiCaprio called Pope Francis "a transformational leader - not only for the Catholic Church, but also for environmental reform and activism".
The Revenant and Titanic star also recalled the Pope featuring on his 2016 climate change documentary, Before The Flood, which he called: "enlightening, deeply moving and thought provoking".
"Pope Francis was one of the most extraordinary spiritual leaders of our time. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of environmentalists around the world. May he rest in peace", DiCaprio added.
Meanwhile, Everything Everywhere All At Once star and United Nations Development Ambassador, Michelle Yeoh, paid her own tribute to Pope Francis via social media.
"Pope Francis was a beacon of humility, compassion, and courage. Never afraid to speak up for the most vulnerable, and always reminding us to walk with grace and kindness", she said. "I will forever remember his warmth and his unwavering support for our UN road safety efforts".
"His compassion truly moved the world. May his spirit live on in every act of love we give to others. Rest in peace, Holy Father".
Pope Francis' funeral will take place on Saturday in St Peter's Square.
Other household names to pay tribute, included Sylvester Stallone, Eva Longoria, and Gloria Estefan.
