Lily Allen has reflected on her “mean” comments about Katy Perry’s trip to space and has apologised to the pop singer.
Earlier this month, Perry joined an all-female crew on a round trip to space hosted by Jeff Bezoz’ space tourism company Blue Origin. The crew was made up of scientist Amanda Nguyen, TV host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, entrepreneur Aisha Bowe and author Lauren Sánchez.
The brief space trip has been widely criticised by celebrities and public alike, including Allen who called the entire mission “out of touch” and that there was “no f****** reason” for it.
“Do we want to talk about Katy Perry and her mates all going up to space for 12 minutes?” The 39-year-old said. “I mean, what the f****** hell is that all about? But in all seriousness: What? Why?"
Allen added: "We're on the brink of recession, people are really f****** struggling to make ends meet and get food on their table."
On an episode of the Miss Me? Podcast Allen retracted her comments and offered an apology to Perry
“I would actually like to apologise for being mean about Katy Perry last week,”
“There was actually no need for me to bring her name into it, and it was my own internalized misogyny,” the ‘Not Fair’ singer added.
“I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and it was just completely unnecessary to pile on with her. I disagree with what it was that they did, but she wasn’t the only person that did it. She was possibly the most famous and the one that divides people the most.”
"Well, anyway, I'm just sorry. I would have been hurt if it had been me and someone in my industry used me and my name. And I saw that, and I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Katy Perry. I know you don't, don't listen to the show, but, yeah, sorry." she concluded.
However, Allen isn't the only star to criticise the now infamous space trip. Model and podcast host Emily Ratajkowski branded it as “end time s***” and "beyond parody".
In a TikTok video, she said: "Saying that you care about Mother Earth and it’s about Mother Earth, and you’re going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that’s singlehandedly destroying the planet?
"Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space. For what? What was the marketing there?” she added.
"I’m disgusted. Literally, I’m disgusted."
Actress Oliva Munn also shared her opinions on the trip calling it “gluttonous” during her appearance on ‘Today with Jenna & Friends,’
"What are they doing?" the actress said. "Like why?"
"I'm just saying this, I know this is probably not the cool thing to say but like there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now."
