The show created by Jed Mercurio, was one of the most watched in 2021, with the last series' finale surpassing its own record, averaging 12.8 million viewers.

When the series ended, the future of the show has since remained up in the air.

However, actor Martin Compston who plays Detective Inspector Steve Arnott in the drama, has hinted at a series return feeling that there is "definitely scope" for another series.

While promoting his own show Our House, Compston "thinks" there is a future for the show yet.

“We think so. I’m delighted with the response, in terms of people are now really intrigued to see if there is another one, but there's nothing changed for us in terms of where we're at after we finish a series", he said.

“We always take a year between at least", continued Compston. "The dust settles and Jed figures out whether there's a story to tell. So I'm delighted that people are so excited and so desperate to find out but, as I say, this is what we've done after every series so we'll just wait and see what he thinks".

"definitely scope"

"I think there’s definitely scope for it", the actor concluded.

“It's such a sociable show in terms of us, pals, and going out with crew and all that stuff and we filmed the last one during Covid-19 and it was a tough shoot and kind of miserable, because we were one of the first jobs back and it was literally on set, nowhere near anybody, and then back to your flat", Compston also said of shooting the latest TV show during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We couldn't even mix with each other. So I think for us, it wouldn't be nice to go out that way, we'd like to do one more with everybody".

Line of Duty was also named the UK's highest rated show in 13 years. It finished ahead of the likes of Downton Abbey, Doctor Who and Jed Mercurio's Bodyguard.
