Yannis Artopios, a spokesperson for the fire department, has revealed that 2,466 people have been evacuated from the island, but added that no hotels or houses have been damaged so far.

Along with Evia, Corfu has become the latest Greek island where people have been forced into an overnight evacuation as the country continues to battle a series of wildfires.

Another popular Greek island Rhodes, has also faced a major evacuation of tens of thousands of people, with holidaymakers facing a frantic scramble to get home.

Many holidaymakers made a beeline to Rhodes international airport, desperately seeking flights home, with some being forced to sleep on beach towels, as they stay at the airport overnight.

These fires have led to mass evacuation, along with several cancelled flights, as firefighters tackle a blaze, which hit during peak tourism season. The fire services have stated that the fire broke out in Evia, Greece's second largest island, forcing evacuation across several residential areas.
