The news was confirmed by the show's official Twitter account.

"We are so sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and almost 9,000 episodes broadcast we have to confirm that Neighbours will cease production in the summer", they wrote. "Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show".

"To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours".

The show's future had been in jeopardy when Channel Five confirmed it had stopped airing the soap last month. They said that dropping the show would allow for funding for original UK dramas.

Neighbours had been initially launched on Austrailia's Seven network in 1985. It was axed from the channel, before Ten network picked it up a year later, before becoming an international hit.

It had also been broadcasted on Austrailian channel 10 Peach since 2011, however they relied on the UK for funding.

It had been show on BBC One until 2008, when it moved to Channel Five.

It had featured a number of British guest stars over the years, including Amanda Holden, Ryan Thomas, Janet Street-Porter and Sophie Ellis-Baxter. It also helped to launch the careers of well known Austrailian stars Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Margot Robbie.
