The much debated Netflix hit series, Adolescence, is to be shown in UK secondary schools.
The show which is centred around a 13 year old boy, Jamie, played by Owen Cooper, who is arrested for murdering his classmate, Katie will be shown to minors aged between 11 and 18 at UK secondary schools.
Adolescence also stars actor Stephen Graham, who plays Jamie's dad, Eddie.
Netflix's Vice President of UK Content, Anne Mensah, has said that they are "incredibly proud", adding that they were "delighted to offer it to all schools across the UK".
Mensah also hailed Adolescence for helping to "articulate the pressures young people and parents face".
News of the show's screening in UK secondary schools, was confirmed by the streaming giant, and British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, who had met with the show's creators, charities, and young people at Downing Street to discuss issues raised by the series.
Mr Starmer was joined by Adolescence's writer Jack Thorne and producer Jo Johnson, as well as representatives from the NSPCC and Children's Society for a roundtable discussion.
After the meeting, Jack Thorne expressed his hopes that issues can be raised by the release of this series.
"It's about other people … being given the opportunity to have conversations they haven’t had before and that they should have had that might lead to policy change and things being made better for our young people", he said afterwards.
This meeting was described as a "critical milestone" by Maria Neophytou, who also warned that "the online world is being polluted by harmful and misogynistic content", which is having a harmful effect on young people's behaviour.
Speaking about the show, Keir Starmer said that he watched it with his wife and their teenage children, adding that it "hit home hard".
Mr Starmer added that he wanted to talk about "what can we do as a society to stop and prevent young boys being dragged into this whirlpool of hatred and misogyny".
"It's pernicious and persistent. But what Adolescence shows is that it’s now taken on a different form, or different characteristics", he stated.
The Prime Minister added the world of social media means "ideology" can be "pumped directly into the minds of our children".
"I do think there is a sense of isolation going on here, and therefore we can't deal with these challenges just with the old tools that we have. I don’t think there’s a simple solution".
Speaking of Adolescence, the show also featured Stephen Graham's real wife, Hannah Walters. Find out more on this here.
