Paying tribute to Payne, Niall Horan has said that he is "absolutely devastated".
Irish singer Horan revealed that he had seen Payne a few days before his death, with Payne having attended Horan's live show in Argentina.
"I feel so fortunate that I got to see him recently," he said. "I sadly didn't know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, I would be saying goodbye forever. It's heartbreaking".
Horan said that the news of Payne's death "just doesn't feel real", adding that he had an "energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious".
"He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure".
The Mullingar native also added: "Thank you for everything, Payno. Love you brother".
Elsewhere, fans left notes and pictures at the Hard Rock Cafe in central London in tribute to Payne.
This location is home to a popular piece of One Direction memorabilia in the form of a cover of the boyband's 2012 album, Take Me Home.
Notes included at the location include one fan's message, "I'll never forget you".
