Rumours had been spreading that the band consisting of Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson were tipped to reunite for the final episode, with James Corden stepping down as host on April 27.
These rumours began after it emerged that all five former band members all happened to have a break in their schedul around the period of this final episode, with the likes of Horan and Styles not having any shows scheduled until May, Louis Tomlinson's planned tour of Asia being cancelled, Liam Payne not due to appear on Soccer Aid until late June, while Zayn Malik has only recently returned to social media.
However hopes of a 1D reunion were dashed as The Late Late Show ruled this out in a statement shared via social media, leaving fans heartbroken.
"Nobody loves the boys more than us, but this [news] isn't true", they said. "What is true is we've got an absolutely brilliant 2 hour finale planned to celebrate 8 years of The Late Late Show at 10pm on April 27th".
Last month, Louis Tomlinson did admit that a One Direction reunion is "hard to imagine right now", however he did refuse to rule out the possibility of the famous five getting together in the future.
"I'd be surprised if we lived out our lives and didn't have a moment where we had a reunion, or whatever you want to call it. I'd be up for that", he said.
