Previously unheard music from the late Michael Jackson has been found at an abandoned storage unit.
It was reported that some cassettes and DAT tapes featuring unheard music from Jackson were found in an old storage unit in San Fernando Valley. The old unit had belonged to singer and music producer Bryan Loren at one stage.
Overall, 12 tapes were found, which date between 1989 and 1991, with as many as 15 unheard songs found on these tapes, some of which had been previously teased, or have had snippets shared, while other songs were completely unheard of.
This hidden set of gems were found by former highway patrol officer Gregg Musgrove, who was reportedly "treasure hunting" at a friend's recently purchased abandoned storage unit along Van Nuys.
Musgrove and his legal team had approached Jackson's estate about these tapes, but the late music legend's estate reportedly declined the offer to purchase them. It appears that Musgrove is the only one to hear these tapes outside the Jackson estate.
Following this, Musgrove received a letter from Michael Jackson's estate, stating that while it does not own these tapes, anyone who purchases these tapes in the future will not have ownership rights to these recordings or compositions.
Insisting that they already belong to the estate, and these tapes are not master copies of the recordings, which are currently located in their vault, the estate had this to say.
“The Estate of Michael Jackson was presented with DAT copies NOT master recordings of Michael’s music, and we confirmed that the actual master recordings were in fact already located in the Estate’s vaults. It should be clear to all that ownership and rights of exploitation to the recordings remain vested in MJJP Records and that nothing commercial or otherwise can be done with the DAT copies", they said.
The estate has said that these tapes can never be released to the public, but those in possession of them can listen to them privately.
Gregg Musgrove and his lawyer have signalled their intentions to sell these tapes under the hammer to fans of the King of Pop, expecting these tapes to sell for a seven figure sum.
Back in November, it was confirmed that the release of the biopic on Michael Jackson would be delayed until next year. More on that here.
