Osman confirmed the news in a statement via the BBC.

"Pointless has been a joy from start to finish, working alongside my friend Alexander Armstrong, backed by the most wonderful team, and for the best viewers in the world", he said.

"I will miss everyone so much, but I’m thrilled that I’ll still be presenting the celebrity shows".

"I can’t thank everyone enough for 12 amazing years".

Richard Osman has added that he will continue to host Pointless Celebrities and his own BBC Two show, Richard Osman's House of Cards

The present and writer added later via social media that he would leave the show "to concentrate on his writing".

"Will miss the whole team, especially the incomparable @XanderArmstrong", he wrote.

Osman has spent nearly 13 years co-hosting Pointless, including over 1,300 episodes and more than 30 series.

"Daytime television’s loss is international best-selling crime fiction’s gain", his co host Alexander Armstrong added. "I say that like it’s a consolation – I’m going to miss the big man next to me Monday to Friday".

"But at least I still get him at weekends – and weekdays if you’re watching on Challenge".

Carla-Maria Lawson who is head of daytime and early peak on BBC also paid tribute to Osman, "While we will miss his wonderful wit and charm on the daytime series, we’re delighted that Richard will continue ribbing and riffing with celebrities in the evening schedules as well as continuing to helm the brilliant Richard Osman’s House of Games for BBC Two".

Besides television, Richard Osman is also an author, with his debut novel The Thursday Murder Club publishing in September 2020. It became a besteller.

Stephen Spielberg's production company later bought the global film rights, with a sequel, The Man Who Died Twice, arriving last September.
