Sarah Michelle Gellar Joins Cast For The Upcoming Dexter Prequal

Sarah Michelle Gellar has joined  the cast of Dexter: Original Sin alongside Irish actor Patrick Gibson.

The TV show will be a prequel to the iconic Dexter series that ran from 2006 to 2013 and was originally based off of a series of books by Jeff Lindsay.

The 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' star is set to play the role of Tanya Martin, a CSI Chief at the Miami Metro Police Department and Dexter Morgan's new boss.

Production is well underway for the original 10-episode drama series that will stream on Paramount+. It follows Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) as he becomes a ruthless serial killer with the aid of his adoptive father, Harry. With Harry's help, Dexter embarks on a vengeful murdering spree, adopting a code to target those who, in his eyes, “deserve to be eliminated from society”. This becomes increasingly risky as he takes up a forensics internship in Miami's Metro Police Department.

Gellar joins an already star studded cast including Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey, Reno Wilson and Molly Brown.

“Sarah Michelle Gellar is a pop culture icon who perfectly rounds out our best-in-class cast featuring Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey among others,” says president of content and CCO, Showtime, Nina L. Diaz. “We’re thrilled to have her return to the Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios family and join the origin story of the Dexter franchise.”

The TV star shared a photo to Instagram stories of the first page of the script, written by showrunner Clyde Phillips and directed by Michael Lehmann, the director of ‘Heathers’.

The iconic actress is best known for her role as Buffy Summers on the beloved 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' series. She has also featured in many iconic films such as 'Cruel Intentions', 'What You Did Last Summer' and 'The Grudge'. She also played the iconic Daphne Blake in James Gunn's 'Scooby Doo' movie.

Her most recent credits have been on the Paramount+ supernatural teen series 'Wolf Pack' of which she both starred in and executively produced. She also featured in the recent dark comedy film ‘Do Revenge’.

'Dexter: Original Sin' won't be the only upcoming addition to the Dexter franchise, as a separate series focusing on Dexter's son, Harrison Morgan, played by Jack Alcott  is also in development.
