Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Geller, has revealed that the hugely successful 1990s TV drama is set to make a comeback.
Geller, who played Buffy Summers in the show which ran from 1997 to 2003, has explained why she decided to revisit the world of Buffy, over two decades after the show ended.
Taking to Instagram, Geller revealed that plans to revive the show are underway, but remained coy over whether it would return as a reboot or a sequel. She did say that she spoke to director Chloe Zhao about this three years prior.
Admitting that she did not agree to continue with Buffy's story at the time, Geller wrote: "Our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us".
She also added that she did "shock" by agreeing to continue the conversation "until ultimately, one day, we landed on an idea".
Elsewhere, Sarah Michelle Geller stated that she has always listened to fans, who wanted to see the show return to screens.
"But it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right. This has been a long process, and it's not over yet", she said. "I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there".
Reports had suggested that Geller was "in talks" to play her iconic character, although she did not lead the new series, which would be based on a new slayer.
It was also reported that the sequel "is nearing a pilot order at [US streaming network] Hulu".
The pilot is said to be written by sisters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. The pair had previously worked on shows such as Suits, Fringe, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, with Chloe Zhao set to return as director.
It was also reported that Dolly Parton is to serve as executive producer on the show, via her production company, Sandollar, which also worked on the original Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel TV series.
