Shrek 5 Starring The Original Cast Set To Release In 2026

DreamWorks has announced that Shrek 5 is currently in development, and is set to star many of the original cast members.

A plotline has yet to be revealed but the studio has confirmed that Mike Myers will return as the Scottish-accented ogre Shrek. As well as that, both Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy will return as Shrek’s wife Fiona and his loyal sidekick Donkey.

Though fan favourite Antonio Bandera, who voices Puss In Boots has yet to be confirmed as a cast member in the new instalment.

DreamWorks took to X on Tuesday to announce the fifth Shrek saying “Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”

The iconic franchise was originally based off of the 1990 book by William Steig. The first film was released in 2001 and was a hit at the box office, scoring DreamWorks a whopping $487m worldwide. 

The franchise has since seen four separate instalments before its presumed conclusion in 2010. When Shrek 5 releases in 2026 It will have been 16 years since the last Shrek film [Shrek Forever After].

Shrek has received many spin offs since its last film release in 2010. Two of the most popular spin-offs, focusing on Puss in Boots, were released in 2011 and 2022 , both being nominated for Oscars.

Murphy had hinted at the possibility of his character, Donkey, receiving a spin off of his own someday saying "Shrek is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie."
