Sir Stephen Fry took part in the celebrity edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? over the weekend, where he took home a credible £250,000.
The actor and comedian fell at the £500,000 hurdle, after getting stuck on a question about a pop song.
Hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Fry was asked: “Which of these cover songs entered the UK Top 40 the longest time after the original version first charted?”.
The options were the following: ‘Tragedy’ by Steps, ‘Fast Car’ by Jonas Blue & Dakota, ‘Uptown Girl’ by Westlife, or ‘Killing Me Softly’ by The Fugees.
Following this, Stephen Fry elected to use his Phone A Friend option, choosing Pointless presenter Richard Osman as his lifeline.
“Well Jeremy this is not my subject I’m afraid, but I’ve got one friend who might know these things, he’s pretty good on pop music I think and that’s Richard Osman, so we might as well give him a tinkle", he told Clarkson.
Unfortunately, Richard was unable to provide an answer, forcing Fry to decide not to risk it and answer the question, instead choosing to walk away with the £250,000. Fry said this money would go towards mental health charity, MIND.
“The fact is I’m clearly going to have to pack it in here” he said. “But it’s been amazing and so I’ll take the money and run, that’s my final response!”, Fry said.
The correct answer was Jonas Blue and Dakota's 2015 cover of 'Fast Car'. The original track was released by singer Tracy Chapman, which first charted in 1988.
Earlier this month, Stephen Fry paid tribute to comedian Tony Slattery, who passed away aged 65. More on this here.
