Tom Cruise has paid a sweet tribute to his Top Gun co star Val Kilmer, who passed away this week aged 65.

Cruise, whose on screen relationship with Kilmer, played a key role in the movie's legacy, led a moment's silence with cinema owners at the recent CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, before sharing new footage of his latest movie, Mission: Impossible.

Ahead of his much anticipated appearance at the event, Cruise said: "I'd like to honour a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer,".

He continued: "I really can't tell you how much I admired his work, how much I thought of him as a human being, and how grateful and honoured I was when he joined Top Gun and then came back for Top Gun: Maverick".

Leading the audiences on a lengthy silence at Caesurs Palace casino, Tom Cruise called on the crowd to "take a moment and just think about all the wonderful times that we had", as he watched Kilmer on screen.

"I wish you well on your next journey", Cruise said to Kilmer.

He also told the audience: "Thank you all for doing that. I know he appreciates it".

Val Kilmer passed away this week aged 65, his family confirmed this week.

The actor's cause of death was pneumonia. He had been battling throat cancer since 2014, making his final on screen appearance in the 2022 Top Gun sequel, Maverick, which saw AI technology recreate the actor's voice.
