The mother of Marty Morrissey has tragically passed away following a single-car collision in Co. Clare. According to reports, the late Peggy Twomey sadly passed away when an accident occurred in Annagh, Miltown Malbay, at around 12.30 am yesterday morning. Mrs Morrissey was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision before her body was brought to Limerick University Hospital.

Cops have launched an investigation into the crash, with the road in Annagh remaining closed while Forensic Collision Investigators carry an examination of the scene.

An Garda Síochána are appealing for any witness to come forward and are requesting dashcamera footage from those travelling on that road at the time. “Anyone with information is asked to contact Kilrush Garda Station on 065 908 0550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”

According to one publication, Peggy had been travelling to a nearby hotel take cover from Storm Barra when the crash occurred. A source close to the paper said Peggy was “frightened of storms. She never liked being on her own.”

Local councillor for the Kilrush area of Co. Clare, PJ Kelly, said “it is a terrible tragedy. Peggy would have been well known in the area. My thoughts go out to her family.

While local TD, Cathal Crowe paid tribute; “Earlier this evening it was confirmed that the lady who tragically lost her life in last night’s road accident near Miltown Malbay was Peggy Morrissey, mum of the much-loved Marty Morrissey. RIP Peggy, light of heaven to your soul. My very deepest sympathies to Marty.

Raised in the Bronx in New York until he was 10 years old, Marty’s family then bought a pub in Quilty, Co. Clare. However, Peggy had flown back to Cork when she was pregnant from the USA as she wished for him to be born on Irish soil.

Speaking previously about his mother’s “resilience”, the broadcaster said, “She's from Doneraile and insisted I was born in Ireland, so I was born in Mallow. Then after a couple of weeks - I don't obviously remember - she went back on one of those propeller planes for a 17-hour flight back to New York with me in her arms.

My dad, Martin, was back in New York because he had a job.  It was some journey.  She was brilliant, to be fair to her. She's got some resilience!
