Along with plans to re-release their back catalogue, plans are also underway to release a new documentary for Netflix, set to be available on July 5.
Remaining Wham! band member Andrew Ridgeley has entered talks with representatives of the late George Michael to celebrate the band's 40th anniversary in a big way.
“There are loads of things being lined up to celebrate Wham! for the 40th anniversary", a source has said. "Andrew has been working with George’s estate to come up with ideas to honour the group’s legacy and one of those is the Netflix documentary".
“It features loads of unseen footage", the source added. "There are still millions of Wham! fans around the world and it will be really special for them to hear the group’s stories because there’s lots in there that Andrew has never spoken about before".
George Michael who passed away in 2016, met Ridgeley at school and the pair enjoyed huge success as Wham! with a string of hits including 'Last Christmas', 'Wake Me Up Before You GoGo' and 'Careless Whisper' during the 1980s, before they split up in 1986. George Michael went on to enjoy a prosperous solo career.
Earlier this week, a TikTok account named 'Club Tropicana' inspired by a Wham! hit, was also set up to bring the band's music to a new set of fans.
"It’s heart-warming to know that the TikTok generation embrace Wham!’s vibrancy and its appeal to the young and youthful endures", Ridgeley said.
