Speaking with NBC's Today on Wednesday, Jada Pinkett-Smith has said that she and Will Smith "live separately". It was also reported that this separation is essentially a "divorce", as the pair are no longer involved romantically.
When asked about the secrecy surrounding their split, Pinkett-Smith said that they "weren't ready" yet.
"[We were] still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership, right? And in regards to how do we present that to people," she added. "And we hadn't figured that out".
Speaking about their separation, Pinkett-Smith claimed that "a lot of things" caused the pair to split up.
"I think by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying," she revealed. "I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be".
Jada Pinkett-Smith has said that she had considered making it official, however she claimed that she "made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce".
"We will work through whatever. And I just haven't been able to break that promise".
The couple's marriage has been the subject of much speculation, with Jada Pinkett-Smith admitting to an "entanglement" with singer August Alsina.
Last year, Will Smith also became embroiled in a controversy, having slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage at the Oscar's ceremony, after Rock had joked about Jada's baldness.
They married in December 1997, and share two children Jaden aged 25 and Willow aged 22.
